    Subspecialty Procedure

Spleen Surgery & Splenectomy in Dhaka

Surgery of the spleen — splenectomy — is performed for haematological diseases, trauma, cysts, tumors, and severe enlargement. Dr. Arefin performs both laparoscopic and open splenectomy at Popular Medical College Hospital with a focus on safe vascular control and pre/post-operative vaccination.

    When splenectomy is indicated

    • Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) failing medical therapy
    • Hereditary spherocytosis and selected haemolytic anaemias
    • Splenic trauma with haemodynamic instability
    • Splenic cysts, abscesses, and tumors
    • Massive splenomegaly causing pain or pressure symptoms

    Surgical approach

Most elective splenectomies for normal-to-moderately-enlarged spleens are performed laparoscopically. Massive splenomegaly and trauma usually require open surgery for safe vascular control.

    Pre and post-operative care

Vaccination against pneumococcus, meningococcus, and Hib is given 2 weeks before elective surgery (or as soon as possible after emergency cases). Patients receive lifelong advice on infection awareness and may require prophylactic antibiotics in selected groups.
