    Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Dhaka

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold-standard treatment for symptomatic gallstones — a keyhole procedure to remove the diseased gallbladder through 3–4 small incisions. Dr. Murshidul Arefin performs over 200 laparoscopic cholecystectomies each year at Popular Medical College Hospital, Dhanmondi — most as same-day or next-day discharges.

    What laparoscopic cholecystectomy involves

Under general anaesthesia, 3–4 small incisions (5–12 mm) are made in the abdomen. A high-definition camera and long instruments are passed in to dissect the gallbladder away from the liver bed and the bile ducts. The cystic duct and cystic artery are clipped and divided, and the gallbladder is extracted through the umbilical port in a retrieval bag. The whole operation takes 30–60 minutes for routine cases.

    When this surgery is needed

    • Symptomatic gallstones with biliary colic, fatty-food intolerance, or jaundice
    • Acute or chronic cholecystitis
    • Gallbladder polyps >1 cm or rapidly growing
    • Asymptomatic stones in diabetics, transplant candidates, or before bariatric surgery
    • Porcelain gallbladder (calcified wall — premalignant)

    Recovery and discharge

Most patients eat a light meal within 4–6 hours of surgery and walk the same evening. Hospital stay is typically same-day or one night. Wound pain is mild and controlled with oral analgesics. Patients return to desk work in 5–7 days and to manual work or driving in 10–14 days. The umbilical and subcostal scars fade over 3–6 months.

    Why laparoscopic over open surgery

Compared to open cholecystectomy, the laparoscopic approach offers smaller scars, less wound pain, lower wound-infection and incisional-hernia rates, shorter hospital stay (1 day versus 5–7), and faster return to work (1 week versus 4–6). Open conversion is needed in <3% of routine cases. Dr. Arefin will convert promptly when patient safety requires it — this is judgment, not failure. Book a consultation to discuss your case.
